Why OEM is easier here
Integrated racks, lights and wiring make commuter e-bikes fiddlier for generic fender stays than plain bicycles; Aventon's set is shaped around their own rack and cable routing, which saves the classic hour of stay-bending.
Install tip
Set front fender clearance with the fork compressed if your Level has a suspension fork; fender-to-tire gaps that look fine unloaded can buzz when the fork dips under braking.
Install mistakes that invite rattle
- Overtightening stays into plastic parts. Snug plus a quarter turn is the neighborhood; cracking a mount is permanent.
- Skipping thread-locker on stay bolts. Commuter mileage is vibration mileage; bolts back out by week three without it.
- Leaving stays uneven. The fender should trace the tire's curve with even clearance; a fender cocked to one side buzzes at speed and collects debris on the tight side.
- Never re-tensioning. Every bolted fender settles. One wrench pass after the first bumpy week is the difference between silence and a permanent tick you learn to hate.
Winter, salt, and the mudflap upgrade
Fenders earn their keep in winter and suffer for it. Salt spray crusts on the underside and holds moisture against the stays, so an occasional rinse under the fender after salty rides keeps hardware from seizing by spring; check stay bolts monthly through the wet season. The cheap upgrade the commuter community swears by is a rubber mudflap extending the front fender: it protects your feet and the drivetrain from the low spray a standard-length fender still throws. A strip of stiff rubber and two small bolts is all the flap needs to be.
