Rattle-proofing tip
The universal cure for fender noise: check every stay bolt with thread-locker, add a rubber washer where the fender meets the bridge, and re-tension after the first bumpy week. Silence is a maintenance state, not a factory setting.
Salt seasons and metal fenders
Full metal fenders earn their keep in winter, which is also when they need the most attention. Road salt collects on the fender underside and around the stay hardware; a periodic rinse underneath, not just a top-side wipe, keeps corrosion from starting at the mounting points. A dab of grease or anti-seize on stay bolts during installation pays off the first time you need to adjust them after a winter. Touch up paint chips on the fender edges where grit sandblasts the finish. None of this is urgent in any single week; skipping it for a whole season is how hardware seizes.
A bent fender is usually a bent stay
When a fender starts rubbing after a knock, a parking scrape or a tipped-over bike, the fender blade itself is rarely the problem. The thin metal stays bend first, and they bend back: loosen the stay hardware, sight down the fender-to-tire gap, and re-form the stay by hand until the gap runs even along the tire's curve. Blades that did take a crease can often be massaged straight enough to run silently. The mudflap upgrade
The commuter community's favorite cheap addition to any full-fender bike: a mudflap extending the front fender's rear edge down toward the ground. It intercepts the spray the standard fender length lets through, which otherwise coats your feet, the chainring and the lower cabling in road film. Commercial flaps bolt or rivet on; the long-standing DIY version cut from a plastic jug or an old tire sidewall works identically. On the rear fender, a flap mostly protects whoever rides behind you, which makes it good manners on group commutes rather than a personal upgrade.
